The Mariposa Reading Program
The Mariposa Reading Program starts with letter-sound relationships, creating a strong basis for further work decoding words in a logical process of segmenting and blending. Most parents recognize this phonics approach, also known as phonemic awareness, from elementary school; but Mariposa reinforces the individual student’s understanding with creative exercises at each skill level. A cheerful caterpillar unites the logic and the practice of segmenting and blending activities. The program enables students to develop reading and spelling skills with single syllables, then multi-syllable words, sentences, paragraphs, and short stories.
Mariposa provides specialized reading therapy, not tutoring. Initial assessments determine the reading level and possible problems with phonological processing, language development and comprehension. The results are translated into realistic goals for improvement as well as accurate measures of success upon completion.
Each session is fifty minutes with a qualified clinician, and a minimum of three sessions per week is recommended. An accelerated program provides more sessions each day/week, and some exceptional cases may attend less frequently. Hard work, individual attention, consistent positive reinforcement, and humour prove a winning combination for all students.
