THE PROBLEM

Many weak readers and spellers have difficulty making sense out of words because they have not discovered the letter-sound code which underlies reading and spelling skills.

They cannot determine:

*    What sounds go with what letters (especially vowels).

*    How many sounds there are in a word.

*    The order of the sounds in the word.

*    Which sounds are the same or different.

This causes them to:

*    Add unnecessary sounds to words (bly for by).

*    Omit sounds within words (sped for spend).

*    Substitute one sound for another (equitment for equipment).

*    Reverse sounds in a word (was for saw)
